06. Is there a scientific approach behind The My English School Reading Programme? What is it?
The My English Reading Programme has its roots in the reading programme promoted by Rudolf Flesch. The research that has been done since then in the field of linguistics culminates in the “Reading First Program”, that which is widely promoted by the U.S. Department of Education. Our reading programmes consist of the same key elements as the ones that were the result of the scientific-research based report (that reviewed more than 100,000 studies on reading):
- Phonemic awareness (blending, segmentation, and identification and manipulation of sounds in words)
- Decoding (Phonics)
- Reading Fluency
- Vocabulary development
- Reading comprehension strategies
What makes the My English Reading Programme unique in the Singaporean context is that it incorporates:
- Reading and understanding (comprehension)
- Efficient and age-appropriate materials for young learners
- Materials that broaden a child’s field of experience
- Integration towards the My English Primary Programme and the required learning outcomes as set out by the Ministry of Education
07. How long will it take for my child to progress to the next level?
The My English Reading Programmes are ability-based programmes. Students are promoted to the next level when they consistently achieve the required learning outcomes for the programme that they are currently enrolled in. The outcomes are monitored and recorded continually by the teacher who will make the necessary recommendations.
The My English Primary Programme is a year-long programme that guides students through a meticulous process of learning in their respective levels. They will gain the skills and nuances needed when speaking publicly and be encouraged to apply critical thinking and independent learning.
08. Why should my child attend the assessment?
Each child is different. Two children of the same age may have different skill levels/learning needs based on the influences from family, exposure in pre-school and social environment and more.
Hence, students at the same age have different learning needs and may be placed in different courses.
Our reading programme has four progressive courses and each course teaching different skills. The assessment ensures that a child is placed at the most appropriate course to match their current learning needs.
After the assessment, our front desk colleagues will assist you with the class schedule and finding a most suitable class for your child.
09. How does the teacher determine when my child is ready for promotion in the Reading Programme?
Promotion is based on your child’s own individual readiness instead of his/her age.
Every child learns at his/her own pace. Every student’s progress is tracked based on a checklist which is updated by our teachers regularly. Once a student has shown that he/she has met the goals of the course, a test will be administered to confirm the promotion to the next level. Thus, promotion to the next level can happen at any time of the year and not just at the end of the year.
10. How is the primary programme beneficial for my child?
The primary programme covers all the areas of the English language. The various key areas are taught in a spiral approach by ensuring that difficulty increases as the years go by.
11. How is the My English Primary programme beneficial for my child?
The My English Primary Programme covers all the areas of the English language. The various key areas are taught in a spiral approach by ensuring that difficulty increases as the years go by.
12. Is the My English Primary Programme aligned to what is expected in MOE schools?
The primary programme is aligned to the expectations and assessment criteria of MOE. The programme prepares students for the various papers that students will be assessed on. The lesson booklets may look a little different from what students may see in school but rest assured that the content taught and delivered at My English School is comparable and is comparable and goes beyond what students are required to learn.
