Highlights
Our founding Dean, Professor Lionel Astor (“Lee”) Sheridan, passed away on 24 July 2025 at the age of 98. We pay tribute to the man who arrived at the Bukit Timah campus in 1956, and transformed the Law Department—originally envisaged to be located within the Faculty of Economics and Social Studies—into a fully-fledged Faculty in its own right in 1959. From the inaugural Chair in Law to Dean of the Law Faculty, Professor Sheridan paved the way for NUS Law to scale the heights over the years, becoming Asia’s global law school today.
Ahead of the move back to Kent Ridge, NUS Law would like to celebrate and reflect on our time at the historic Bukit Timah campus (BTC) with a commemorative artwork.
We are inviting NUS Law students, alumni, staff and friends to submit their proposals to conceptualise and create an original piece of art. This piece of art should capture the spirit, community and memories of the campus and serve as a tribute for current and future generations of the NUS Law community.
In a world first in legal publishing, NUS Law has created a podcast series based on articles from the Singapore Journal of Legal Studies (SJLS). Produced using Google’s AI-powered tool, NotebookLM, this marks the first time a legal journal has used generative AI to turn peer-reviewed legal research into accessible audio content.
The initiative reflects NUS Law’s commitment to building on its academic legacy while embracing new ways to share legal knowledge.
We congratulate three of our alumni for their appointments in the Supreme Court. Judicial Commissioners Christopher Tan Pheng Wee ’98 and Kristy Tan ’04 will be appointed as High Court judges from 1 August 2025. Justice Steven Chong ’82 will be reappointed as Justice of the Court of Appeal from 23 September 2025. The new appointments and reappointment are a recognition of our alumni contributions to Singapore law, all of whom have served in the judiciary for many years.
The Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) and Jigme Singye Wangchuck School of Law (JSW Law) deepened their cross-border collaboration through a summer school programme in Bhutan for the third year running. The Undergraduate Summer School is a partnership among CALS, JSW Law and the National Law School of India University, Bangalore. During the two-week programme from 9 to 22 June 2025, students had the opportunity to select two out of three intensive courses offered, as well as explore Bhutan’s legal and cultural heritage.
The Centre for Asian Legal Studies (CALS) at National University of Singapore Faculty of Law (NUS Law) was proud to host Her Excellency Tun Tengku Maimun binti Tengku Mat, the former Chief Justice of Malaysia and the current President of the Asean Law Association (ALA), for a fireside chat held on 10 July. The event centred on the timely and urgent theme, “Justice for All: Advancing Gender Equality in the Law”.
