We all love ducks. They’re tiny adorable little things that always seem to appear on those Chinese paintings that cost a million bucks or so. But we’re Malaysians too, and Malaysians love to eat, and we oddly don’t seem to be having any qualms about roasting adorable poultry to fill our stomachs, which is generally for the better as they taste reaaallly good for those of you you haven’t tried it….._the point being—_this is going to be a roast duck review. Let’s dig in.
Today we journey to the lesser known region of Sunway Mas in PJ to a roast duck joint that I’m personally very fond of due to the excellent price/quality ratio they offer (translation: it’s cheap & good). Not particularly sure how to describe the location here… if you’re coming from Bandar Utama, just go straight and it’ll be on your left, occupying a corner lot right next to a 99 SpeedMart.
Like any other restaurants, you can order ala carte if you want to, but I find that the sets are much more worth it in terms of pricing, and generally cover Jiang’s best dishes well enough. We took the 2-3pax set, didn’t bother to add any more because… well, you’ll see.
Welcome, the centrepiece of our dinner! I know it looks like roast duck, but its actually this restaurant’s version of Peking Duck. We asked the boss whether we could switch the regular roast duck in our set to Peking Duck, and he so graciously obliged (with no extra charge!) :D. It’s available on an on-off basis though, so dont expect to be able to have it every time.
What I can say regarding the duck is this: it’s tender and juicy on the inside, while the skin was delightfully crispy on certain drumstick parts. I love that you can really savour the natural duck taste as you bite into it. Those of you who love to munch on bones are in for a treat too – the bones of the Peking Duck has that burnt smoky aroma we all love. Leave no bone unsucked!
Now, despite being a duck restaurant Jiang’s also has Siew Yuk (Roast Pork) and Char Siew (Barbeque Pork) to feature in their repertoire. They come with most of the set meals, so you usually get to try it too if you order the sets.
The Siew Yuk was salty in some parts, but was countered by the skin being gloriously crispy, each piece coming off an audible ‘crunch’. The Char Siew was very good, mainly due to the coating – sweet, sticky and delectable. Bonus points for the slightly burnt parts too, which we got in gleeful abundance. We were also lucky in terms of the meat selection today, as the cuts we got were neither too fat nor thin. All in all, both would be considered above average were you to encounter it in a normal coffeeshop.
We’ve covered the meats already, yet our set still has one more main to dish out. It was a tasty bowl of Assam Vegetable Soup, enough to serve all three of us (and then some). This one leaned towards the spicy side more than the sour side, which is good news for all you chili-lovers. Quite generous on the ingredients too, definitely not skimping on that part.
Our sets also came with free, refillable Chinese-style Soup of the Day for each of us. You know how most chicken and duck restaurants serve you plain MSG/Ajinomoto soup? Here we have ‘char choy tong’ for today (preserved vegetables soup). Being free it ended up tasting rather average, but its nice to see them make the effort, y’know?
That rounds up our meal for today, which came up to a grand total of…. RM36. Yep, thirty-six ringgit. So let’s just assume that I’m overrating this place for a moment. There may be places which serve better versions of the food we tasted today (*cough*Canton-i ), but I’m sure as hell none of them is serving a plate of roast duck, char siew, siew yuk, a bowl of assam veg soup, even more soup, rice and chinese tea all bundled up together for a tax-free bill of only RM36. That’s a steal, and you know it.
Location: 20-1, Jalan PJU 1/3A, Sunway Mas Commercial Centre, 47301, Petaling Jaya, Selangor
Operating hours: Weird & unspecified. I’d say come in the evening, as they take a break in the afternoon after serving the lunch crowd. Plus, they would’ve just finished cooking their next batch in the evening so it’s all nice and hot~
