When I went to Hainanese Village Centre to cover a stall last week, it was closed for spring cleaning. I then made a second trip on a Monday the following week and thankfully, Apollo Western Food was one of the few stalls that opened that day. Phew!

Apollo Western Food has been in business for 35 years now. The owner, Kelvin, learned the ropes from his mother, who sold Western food for over 20 years. Initially, Kelvin didn’t want to take over the business. However, he changed his mind when business was soaring. He didn’t want his parents’ efforts to go down the drain. Now, Kelvin and his wife man the stall. This friendly couple prepares everything from scratch and focuses on quality.

Initially, the plan was to order the ribeye steak and chicken chop. Unfortunately, both were unavailable. How sad! “The hawker centre was closed last week. The ones you wanted to order are usually always available, but because it’s the first day of the week, we didn’t have enough time to marinate the meats. You can try the rest, they are available,” the friendly aunty expressed. I understood where she was coming from. Well, things don’t go our way, all the time, do they? There’s certainly no reason to be disappointed since there are so many other options to choose from! I looked up at the menu and decided on the Chicken Cutlet ($6) and Fish and Chips ($5).

You can’t really go wrong with anything chicken unless it’s cooked awfully. The chicken cutlet was crispy on the outside, and tender on the outside. What took me by surprise was how it tasted — just like Japanese karaage chicken! It’s unusual for chicken cutlet to taste like karaage but I’m not complaining! I really enjoyed it!

I thought that the two pieces of breaded dory fillets were quite small. If you have another side dish to go along, the portion might be just nice. But if you’re eating the fish and chips on its own, I doubt it’s enough to satisfy your hunger. The fish was well-seasoned and flavourful though. Don’t forget to squeeze some lime over the fillets!

The toasted bun was moist and soft. I slathered some Lurpak butter, which came with the dish, onto the warm bun, and every bite had me grinning from ear to ear.

I loved that they were generous with the crinkle-cut fries.

The uncle said, “Please come again. Next time I’ll treat you to some nice ribeye steak and chicken chop!” How nice of him! Even though luck wasn’t on my side that day, I still enjoyed both dishes. I will definitely patronize again!
