What’s so hot about the Sun Pavilion? Here are some shiny findings that will prick up your head. With over 1,000 desert plants comprising some 100 different species and varieties, the Sun Pavilion is nothing short of extraordinary.

Most of the cacti originate from

The Americas

Most of the Euphorbias come from

Africa and Madagascar

The fittest cacti can live up to

300 years

Mexican Columnar Cacti

These spectacular plants are capable of surviving for months without rain! Their secret? The ribs that run down their thick trunks allow them to expand and contract according to how much water they need.

Image 27: tile-image

African Euphorbias

These large succulents may look like cacti but are actually members of the rubber tree family. These plants produce a special toxic latex to protect their moisture-rich tissues from hungry and thristy predators

Turk's Cap

The Brazilian Turk's Cap simply fascinates! Mature plants develop wool and bristle-covered spheres at the top, resembling a traditional Turkish fez—that's how these plants got their endearing name!

Brain Cactus

With curvy stems that wrap and twist around each other, it’s obvious how the Brain Cactus got its name. The specimens displayed at the Sun Pavilion are special horticultural cultivars (Mammilllaria elongata 'Monstruosa') selected from plants that grow sideways instead of upwards, giving rise to its unusual appearance!
