Whether you want training looking toward professional work with or singing because you’re moved to sing, welcome you to our studio page!
I gave my first voice lesson in 1986 (39 years ago OMFG!) and since then I’ve sat in on many teachers giving lessons and evaluated their sessions – including getting feedback from the students, a write up from the instructor on each lesson, and of course my observations. As a result of that I’ve hand-selected a small number of outstanding voice teachers to teach at this studio – the only studio in NYC that auditions teachers prior to hiring them. Here’s the criteria I use:
1. Is the teacher fun to be around as reported by the students used in our teacher auditions
2. Did the student make progress in the 1st 50-minute session (as reported by the students and in my observation of the sessions)
3. Is the teacher humble and do they act as a team with the student?
4. Does the teacher have an advanced degree in teaching voice? We screen for this because any performance major can give an okay voice lesson to someone who had similar vocal problems as them, but getting a masters or higher in teaching voice shows commitment and an ability to give successful lessons to people with a diverse array of challenges that are different from what the teacher went through during their performance training. It also indicates that they have invested in someone other than themselves and they tend to be more dedicated.
