SOUK Restorative
Restorative practice pacifies and down-regulates the nervous system, inviting the senses to withdraw into deep relaxation and instill mental clarity through breathwork and opening postures. Postures are held for 3-8 minutes thru the support of props, to create a space of tranquility and rejuvenation. Instead of active muscular engagement and stretching, restorative is much more akin to yoga nidra and guided meditation, creating a sanctuary for the body and mind to retreat and recharge. In a culture that prizes productivity, consumption, and excessive speed, restorative yoga offers the rest and wisdom of non-doing that much of modern habits train us to disregard. Rest is a gift, offers us more variety in our movement practices, and acts as an alternative form of practice during stress, strain, or physical injury. Light to intense movement is encouraged, but not required, prior to restorative sessions, and restorative can be practiced in combination with other more vigorous forms of yoga asana. It is recommended to bring an eye mask and/or a few hand towels/cloths to enhance relaxation.

I have visited many places, including yoga studios, both as a student and as a teacher. Each experience has been unique, but this one truly touched my heart. When I arrived at the studio, I was about 6-8 hours early for my event. Given how much I had traveled, I wasn’t sure what to do. At the front desk, a very kind and humble lady greeted me warmly. She noticed my situation and, with genuine care, offered to let me join an earlier session or find a way to accommodate me in their schedule. Her thoughtfulness and effort left a lasting impression on me. Later that evening, I attended the chanting kirtan (with Radhika Das), where I felt deeply connected with the kind and compassionate souls around me. The energy in the room was incredible, filled with warmth and positivity. It was an experience I’ll never forget, and I left feeling grateful and inspired. I wholeheartedly recommend this place to anyone. It’s not just about the activities they offer—it’s the people and their kindness that make it truly special.

I think I finally have found a place for me. The best yoga classes no doubt. Yoga practice that is not rushed, gives you time to connect to your body but at the same time intense and makes you really move and sweat and release and stretch. Yoga teachers know what they are doing. The whole community they created comes from a giving place.

I absolutely love my classes at Souk! I take Rimas class on Tues & Wed night after work and it is such a nice way to end my day. I always sleep so well :) Rima is such a thoughtful teacher. She takes the time to learn everyone’s name who walks through the door and rly pushes you to be your best yogi self in class. She also plays great music, tells beautiful stories and is very funny :) her and I think it’s Sarah also are very generous with their adjustments and assists which is a dream for any yogi! I’ve also taken George’s sound baths on Thursdays and it is pure bliss. He has a very warm and calming energy and you feel so welcomed and relaxed before you even get on your mat. I would definitely recommend Souk to anyone wanting a thoughtful and fulfilling yoga experience in NYC. Thank you for everything Souk!!
