MEET THE TUTOR
Mrs Janice Chung
23 years of experience teaching English
Ex-MOE Senior Teacher, specialising in enhancing the standard of English in the school
Her tried-and-tested curricula and teaching methods have guided at least 2000 pupils to improve their English and achieve distinctions
Has a Specialist Certificate in Language Curriculum and Materials Development by SEAMEO Regional Language Centre (RELC)
(Only 5 Singaporean teachers were selected to attend this course with teachers from other countries)
Nominated twice for the 'Inspirational English Teacher Award', organised by The Straits Times
She teaches most of the pupils from Pri 3 to Sec 4
Janice has used her experience and knowledge to develop a robust curriculum that will help your children holistically, so they can score for English.
In MOE, she specialised in English and was sent for specialised training by SEAMEO Regional Language Centre, where she learnt about the different approaches and issues with language curriculum design, implementation and materials development.
This has given her the privilege of being one of the best English-teaching experts around with her in-depth curriculum not found anywhere else.
Janice's love for teaching led her to estalish McKaylan. She personally teaches most of the classes, ranging from Primary 3 to Secondary 4. Many of her students have been under her tutelage for 4 years or more, allowing her to gain a deep understanding of their strengths and areas for improvement.
We are confident our methods work.
Pupils playing games (developed in-house) to learn English.
We have received many good reviews and feedback from our pupils and their parents.
Holiday Classes (Year End)
Primary 5, 6 | Secondary 3, 4
To prepare your child for the rigours of the next academic year, we are conducting intensive revision courses in December.
Enrol your child for the classes to give him/her a head start over his/her peers.
There are 2 sessions. You can choose Class 1 or 2. Pupils are expected to attend all the lessons (in their selected session).
Bridging Classes for P6 going to S1
The requirements of the Sec 1 English examination vary greatly from the requirements of the PSLE.
Next year, your child will be placed in a different environment from what they are used to in Pri 6. In the first two months, they will be busy adapting to this new environment. In addition, the school will arrange for orientation activities and camps to help them acclimatise to their new learning environment.
Your child will also be sitting for their first test as early as February, even though they may not have been exposed to all the skills (e.g. summary writing) required to excel in the test.
To prepare your child for the rigours of the tests or exams, we will be conducting a Bridging Course to expose your child to the requirements of both Paper 1 and Paper 2.
Enrol your child for the classes so as to give them a head start over their peers. We received great feedback from pupils who had previously attended the course. All of them, mentioned that their teachers only started teaching them summary writing skills in April. Hence, they found the Bridging course useful.
There are 2 sessions. You can choose Class 1 or 2. Pupils are expected to attend all the lessons (in their selected session).
Pupils do not have a wide vocabulary
1
Pupils do not have a wide vocabulary as they do not read enough or are not exposed to good words.
Pupils do not enjoy reading or are not reading widely and regularly. We will expose them to a myriad of interesting texts pitched at the right difficulty.
Research shows that students need to encounter a word about 12 times or more before they know it well enough to help them comprehend it
When students have enough encounters with a word, they’ll begin to use it in their writing and speech. That word then becomes a part of their personal vocabulary bank.
We have a tried-and-tested structured method of teaching vocabulary. Pupils are taught 10 new words every week. After 4 weeks, the pupils will be tested on the words via games and a written test.
We also ensure repeated exposure to the words by incorporating them in other texts and worksheets. This enables students to remember the words easily and use them..
Can't excel in reading comprehension
Pupils do not know how to excel in reading comprehension exercises.
2
They may not have been taught how to answer the questions.
They may not comprehend the texts as they don’t understand the words in the text.
We teach pupils techniques to answer the various types of questions.
We use multimedia elements like videos, PowerPoint slides and even music to engage our learners.
We expand their vocabulary so they understand the texts and answer the questions correctly with the right words.
Can't improve their writing
Pupils do not know how to improve their writing.
3
We teach pupils the structural and language features of different types of compositions. [recounts, narrative, descriptive, argumentative, expository]
We teach pupils how to brainstorm for ideas and craft the composition.
We teach pupils how to use interesting and precise words to enhance their compositions.
We also teach pupil techniques to tackle the situational writing tasks, which require more elaboration in Secondary school.
Not motivated
Pupils are not motivated to learn or improve their English.
4
There is never a dull moment here. Pupils often comment about how times passes so quickly in our classes. Our reply would be times flies when you are having fun.
We use interesting teaching resources to engage our learners.
We conduct competitions and games to make learning fun and meaningful.
Pupils are rewarded with prizes when they do well.
