Bangkok Geography

Bangkok, known in Thai as Krung Thep, is the capital city of Thailand, situated in the heart of Southeast Asia, and the country’s cultural and commercial center. It is also the nation’s main port and the only cosmopolitan city in a country of small towns and villages.

The name Bangkok is commonly used by foreigners and was apparently derived from a time that dates back before the city was built. That is the village (bang) of wild plums (makok). Krung Thep is just the first two words of its very long traditional Thai name.

The city is located on the delta of the Chao Phraya River, about 25 miles from the Gulf of Thailand. It is by far the largest city in Thailand and the 22nd most populous in the world, with a population of about 11 million people, but including the surrounding metropolitan areas this rises to nearer 14 million. It is a true bustling metropolis, complete with shops, tourist attractions, beautiful buildings, and many traditional homes juxtaposed along the roads and canals.

Flights to Bangkok

Bangkok has two airports – these are Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) and Don Mueang Airport (DMK). There is no direct link between them, but there is a direct link from Phaya Thai BTS Station in central Bangkok to Suvarnabhumi Airport.

Suvarnabhumi Airport handles most international flights in and out of Thailand. It also offers a few short-haul domestic flights, but the majority of these are handled by the older and smaller Don Mueang Airport (DMK).

If you travel to Bangkok on an international flight from Europe or the South Pacific, and you are not with a budget airline, you will likely land at Suvarnabhumi Airport. There are two international arrival areas and one domestic, so if you are meeting people at the airport, be sure to take note of their flight numbers.

Major airlines that use Suvarnabhumi Airport include Air China, Air France, ANA, Bangkok Airways, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Delta Air Lines, Emirates, Etihad Airways, Japan Airlines, Lufthansa, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, and Thai Airways.

Direct flights to Bangkok (BKK) include:

Direct Flights (Departure City)Arrival City Frequency Flight Time
London (Heathrow
and Gatwick)Bangkok (BKK)Four times a day 11 hours 30 minutes
Manchester (MAN)Bangkok (BKK)Seasonal (winter and spring)12 hours 30 minutes
Frankfurt (FRA)Bangkok (BKK)Tuesday – Sunday at least once daily (BKK)10 hours 40 minutes (BKK);
Amsterdam (AMS)Bangkok (BKK)Once daily 11 hours 10 minutes (BKK)

There is also a range of daily indirect flights from:

● Glasgow (GLA)

● Newcastle (NCL)

● Manchester (MAN)

● Birmingham (BHX)

● Paris (CDG)

● Zurich (ZUR)

There are no direct flights from the United States into Thailand. However, there are many daily flights with one-stop from the New York area airports (JFK, Newark, and LaGuardia), Los Angeles (LAX), San Francisco (SFO), and Chicago (ORD). The flight time between the US and Bangkok varies from about 15 hours to 21 hours.

Suvarnabhumi International Airport itself is located about 19 miles east of Bangkok. There is a direct highway link and a rail connection into the city, and a host of regular buses, trains, and private taxis, making it simple to get into Bangkok from the airport.

Weather in Bangkok

Thailand is a country of extreme weather. It is influenced by its location in the tropical monsoon zone of Southeast Asia and by topographical features which affect the humidity and rainfall. This greatly affects the weather in Bangkok.

The capital city has a wet and tropical climate, but it also has a dry season roughly between the months of November and February. This is the most popular time to visit because the weather is calmer and more predictable, and the northeast monsoon brings cooler, drier air. The temperatures are also fresher during this period, though the average temperature year-round in Bangkok is above 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit).

The monsoon season in Bangkok runs from June to November. About 90 percent of the city’s rain falls during this time of the year. During this period, rain falls almost every day. You can expect short downpours for most of the day, with the heaviest rain coming in the afternoon. In this period you can still expect good weather and lots of sun, however, and most of the rain comes between August and October.

There is a brief inter-monsoon period in March and April when stagnant air produces a distinctly hot and dry climate.

Bangkok: Local Guide

Bangkok is a city with an eclectic mix of attractions. The Grand Palace is the place to begin – and it definitely lives up to its name. The pristine white walls hide priceless relics from the public, but the entrance fee is worth it to see the stunning grounds and the fabulous architecture.

Within the palace there is also the temple of the Emerald Buddha, known as Wat Phra Kaew, which is a must-see. A small emerald and gold-adorned Buddha dons a cloak that the king changes every season.

Another essential visit is to the enormous Reclining Buddha. Located within the beautiful walls of the Wat Pho temple, or The Temple of the Reclining Buddha, it truly has to be seen to be believed. Though this depiction of enlightenment is the central attraction, visitors will also find wonderful murals with more than 400 depictions of the Buddha, and plenty of space to explore.

There are also many markets where you can go and explore and barter – such as the Chatuchak weekend market, one of the biggest flea markets in the world, and where you can buy almost anything if you look hard enough.

Food is central to Thai culture too, and there are many stalls and restaurants to grab some delicious traditional cuisine. Khao San Road is the perfect place for nightlife, bars, restaurants, and entertainment.
