From Gold Medals to Growing Minds

Clarice Lim (MPhil) has always believed that success shouldn’t come with stress, and excellence doesn’t need to cost a childhood.

A Lee Kuan Yew Gold Medalist and recipient of multiple prestigious honours — including the SNOC Gold Medal for Best Trainee Teacher, NTU University Scholars Award, and the Sng Yew Chong Scholarship — Clarice graduated with First Class Honours and a passion for reimagining education.

Over the past 25 years, she’s worn many hats: NTU associate lecturer, NIE supervisor of trainee teachers, Polytechnic Lecturer, MOE Flexi-Adjunct Teacher, MOE-Trained teacher and most importantly — a teacher who received Excellent Service Award as a Mentor to students. She’s worked with thousands of students across various ability levels, always guided by one simple vision: To replace tears over academic performance with joy, curiosity, and lifelong confidence.

I have been in ILLAC as a student for about 3 years and was taught under Mr Ong, my secondary school math tuition teacher. Mr Ong is a very patient teacher and uses extraordinary methods to make sure student grasp the concepts of the subject, such as using real life ways to explain a problem allowing the students to think of the solution by themselves, this way students can better and be much more intrigued to learn not just about math, but also about many things around them. Mr Ong is also a very honest person and voices out his thoughts clearly through different ways not just by teaching. Whenever Mr Ong encounters a problem in which he cannot solve he and his students perform relay thinking, creating numerous solutions. This allows his students to also learn better and have a flexible mind. Mr Ong has helped me greatly throughout my 'N'-level journey, he was very patient with me even though I lacked the foundation for math, as time progresses, my interest in math has expanded exponentially and my grades improved remarkably. Not only helping to improve my grades but also teaching me other values such as resilience, patience and attentiveness.

Furthermore, Mr Ong is a very professional science and maths teacher, he is also a teacher who is easy to approach. Through his lessons, I not only became more confident in my abilities but also more independent. He taught me that anything can be solved with effort and persistence. On top of that, Mr Ong provided me with numerous prelim school papers, which really strengthened my knowledge and helped me prepare thoroughly for exams. Thanks to his guidance, I managed to maintain a consistent A1 grade for Math throughout Secondary 3 and 4 and ultimately achieved an A1 in my O Levels. Mr Ong also taught me Chemistry, and under his guidance, my overall Science grades improved by several levels as well. I’m incredibly thankful for Mr Ong’s dedication and support. Without him, I wouldn’t have been able to achieve the results I desired.

The administrative procedures are smooth with the details well informed to parents by Ms. Charie. Mrs. Wee plans for bootcamps and workshops for the students nearing the exams. With the experiences of working in MOE schools, polytechnic and a local university, Mrs. Wee plans for the programmes and activities with the children's best interest. My elder girl enjoys all the sessions at ILLAC. My younger girl is in Pri 4 this year and we have started her with Math tuition from 28 Sep 2024. After attending 4 lessons, her end-of-year math examination shows an improvement from 60/100 to 83.5/100. Thank you ILLAC for providing a wonderful learning experience for my children.
