We signed up for 10 sessions for our 22-month-old son, who could only say “mama” and “dada” inconsistently and used a few signs to communicate. Fast forward to the week of his last session, he was able to request milk by saying, “I want milk” (approximation) and was copying words much more consistently. As a first time mom, feeding time was quite stressful for me when my child turned 2 months old. He struggled and took an hour to finish the bottled milk with a lot of pauses, grumbling, and crying in the process. Many guesses came to my mind — was he colicky or gassy? Should I change the milk bottle or teat or formula milk brand? Did he have sucking or swallowing issues?

I never knew that I was over feeding my son till I consulted Ms Desiree. To all parents out there, do not fear to seek professional advice on feeding. We went for feeding therapy with Evelyn. She explained the reasons behind this aversion that my daughter is experiencing and patiently answered and many follow up questions that we have. My 18months old son couldn’t transition to solids from baby food because he sucked on his food and if it doesn’t melt, he’d spit it out and we had no idea how to train a baby to process it so he could swallow. Before going for therapy he attempted to swallow his small chicken bit without chewing, would gag and vomit. Thanks to Desiree and team, showed us how to get him to chew his solids before swallowing. The therapist had lots of toys to soothe the child, he was happy to attend sessions, they were effective and compassionate. It is helpful to bring some of the child’s favourite foods and toys to each session.

After a strong recommendation from my son’s paediatrician, we contacted Magic Beans for support with our son who was 3 years old at the time with speech delay.
After 8 months of weekly speech therapy, my son’s (all round) progress has been immense and very noticeable to all. He is not only vocalising more but can communicate his needs better through short sentences and phrases.
We always received feedback after each session (with the session notes) which we found invaluable as that highlighted key areas for us to focus on at home and between his sessions. After a short while, the therapist also built a rapport with our son which facilitated his learning process.

We got to know Magic Beans from a support group in early 2022. After visiting its website, we found Desiree’s experiences and credentials helpful for our boy with Down syndrome. Desiree assessed our boy in August 2022 and concluded that his delayed speech development was mainly due to weak jaw muscles and dyspraxia. Our boy sees Desireee weekly since Aug 2022 and his speech has been improving since. He could say only about ten single words before therapy but today, he is able to say more words and has started saying two words together. We look forward to more collaborations with Desiree to help my boy grow in his speech and for others to understand him better.

We chose Magic Beans as it is one of the speech therapy clinic recommended by KKH. My son started the sessions one year ago. He was non-verbal. Teacher Laureen was assigned to us. She works well with my son. My son started talking earlier this year and now he is talking like most 4 years old. The sessions were tailored to my son's needs. Teacher Laureen is patient, knowledgeable and good at what she does. She also plans her sessions and also works with my son's EIP teacher and KKH doctor.
