What do occupational therapists actually carry around all day? 🤔
This Singapore Occupational Therapy Day, we celebrate our occupational therapists who support patients to participate in meaningful daily activities through thoughtful assessment, creative adaptations, and compassionate care.
Turns out… some tools just refuse to stay in their pockets 😅
When Senior Occupational Therapist Mona Mok cared for a terminally ill zi char chef, she could see how much cooking meant to him. Alongside medical care, she focused on how he could continue doing what mattered most – cooking his signature prawn paste chicken for the team.
Mona works at Yishun Community Hospital’s Inpatient Hospice Palliative Care Service, supporting patients to engage in meaningful activities while preserving their sense of personhood and dignity. Beyond direct patient care, she also mentors junior staff in her person-centred approach.
“A typical day starts with getting to know my patients beyond their diagnosis – who they are, what matters to them, and what gives their life meaning,” she shares.
To complement rehabilitation exercises, Mona introduced mahjong sessions to encourage movement, engagement, and connection. Patients walked faster to the table, gained better shoulder mobility, stayed out of bed longer, and became more animated and socially engaged – even jokingly asking her to “go home first” because the game took so long.
With a former serviceman living with dementia who was often agitated, she developed a simple ritual. She greeted him with a salute, and he would salute back. Colleagues initially found it odd, but they watched as this confused patient calmed down and became more engaged. One day, he shared: "I am happy every time I see you."
Returning to the chef’s story, Mona recognised that his identity was deeply tied to his craft and worked with him to find a way he could still cook despite his physical limitations. As he was unable to stand for long, Mona made simple modifications to his movements, ensuring that he prepared most of his dish while seated, standing only for the final frying. When he served his prawn paste chicken to the team, the pride in his eyes was unmistakable. “In that moment, he was not a patient; he was a chef, sharing joy and love through his cooking.”
These experiences drive Mona to keep growing. She's pursuing a master's degree in Holistic Palliative Care, driven not just by professional requirements but by a genuine desire to better serve her patients.
Away from the hospital, she finds peace in making tea. "Palliative care has taught me to become more comfortable with uncertainty — learning to slow down, sit in silence, and be fully present," Mona reflects.
For her, meaningful care begins with curiosity, presence, and truly seeing the person.
